HIM in Stuttgart

We operate an efficient chemical-physical treatment plant in the port of Stuttgart, located in the midst of the largest metropolitan area of Baden-Württemberg. This plant was built and commissioned in 1996 by SBW Sonderabfallentsorgung Baden-Württemberg GmbH, which was then owned by the state. HIM took over the facility in the year 2000.
Substances are only processed in the chemical-physical treatment plant following a detailed analysis. Waste products are treated by lots in self-contained reaction vessels using sedimentation, neutralisation, reduction, oxidation and / or precipitation.

Liquid, organic acids and bases are neutralised prior to further treatment according to the substances they contain. Heavy metals, chromate or cyanide are either destroyed or immobilised and separated.
After treatment, the resulting sludge is pressed in a chamber filter press prior to proper disposal. The remaining waste water is discharged into the municipal sewer system according to the discharge conditions of the city of Stuttgart.

In the organic tract of the chemical-physical treatment plant, oily liquids are separated into solid, oil and water fractions. Then the water content of the oil fraction is reduced prior to recycling. The watery fraction is treated further in the chemical-physical treatment plant so that the resulting waste water is safe for discharge into the public sewer network. Separated sludge undergoes thermal treatment. Filtrate contaminated with organic substances is collected and cleaned using activated carbon.

In the storage and transshpment installation, wastes are received as bulk goods in IBCs or barrels following an incoming goods inspection and temporarily stored in covered storage areas. The wastes are sorted, conditioned, repackaged and assembled into larger shipments as needed before sending them to one of our plants or a selected cooperation partner.

Solid materials can be treated and waste in the form of dust can be conditioned in a mixing plant.

                      The Disposal Process

Waste management is much more than the actual treatment of wastes. In the Stuttgart chemical-physical treatment plant and transshipment installation, we treat the supplied materials with due diligence, disposing of them properly and safely in the best interests of our customers and the environment. The potential negative impact of hazardous substances is effectively eliminated.

The typical disposal process includes the following steps:

                      Prior to Delivery
Based on the initial analysis of a waste sample, the HIM sales department establishes to which plant and under what acceptance conditions the waste will be delivered; a declaration of acceptance is issued. Receiving inspection tests are also defined at this stage. Prior to each delivery, the waste originator contacts the scheduling department of HIM Stuttgart to arrange a delivery date.

                      Analysis / Receiving Inspection
The results of the receiving inspection are compared to the recorded customer and waste data. Then the in-house laboratory establishes the treatment method as well as the required safety measures.

Waste is accepted at the receiving tanks of the chemical-physical treatment plant or the receiving areas of the hazardous waste collection centre (barrel storage, sludge pits).

                      Safety Standards

The disposal of hazardous wastes is subject to strict legal regulations. In addition, we have implemented our own set of standards to effectively protect people and the environment. With additional obligations imposed by the statutory order on hazardous incidents, specific safety rules were established that have been implemented in the operations of the HIM plant in Stuttgart.

Plant safety inspections are also conducted at regular intervals along with fire protection inspections by the Stuttgart fire department and other authorities. Approval processes pursuant to the Federal Immission Control Act (BImschG) and safety reports form the foundation for the implementation of legal requirements.
